Claude Pro vs Max 5x vs Max 20x: which should you buy?

• Pro ($20/mo base) — the baseline paid tier: substantially more usage than free, access to Claude Code on the Pro allowance, projects and connectors. Fits daily chat use and light coding.
• Max 5x ($100/mo base) — five times Pro's usage. The sweet spot if you run Claude Code sessions most days or work long conversations against big documents and hit Pro's ceiling.
• Max 20x ($200/mo base) — twenty times Pro. For people running Claude Code heavily (multiple sessions, large refactors, agentic workflows) where an interrupted limit mid-task costs real money.

Buy Pro first unless you already know you're a heavy user. The most common upgrade path is: hit Pro's limit during real work twice in a week → move to Max 5x. Jumping straight to Max 20x makes sense only if you already burn through another provider's top tier or you bill by the hour and downtime is expensive.

Gift codes apply per plan and duration — a Pro code can't be topped up into a Max subscription later. If you're unsure, shorter durations cost less to be wrong about: a 1-month Pro code is a $22 experiment.
